Question 474

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace be upon the remnant of the family of Muhammad (a). I hope my guardian is well and in good health, and I ask Him for the relief of the family of Muhammad (a), soon, soon; indeed, He is Generous and answers. My master, I ask Allah to forgive my neglect concerning His side and to accept my repentance for my shortcomings regarding your right over me. Our brother Muhammad al-Sufi spoke to a number of brothers about establishing a treasury in Canada, following what some brothers in other Western countries had previously done, with its proceeds dedicated to spreading the blessed Call and helping those in need. My brother charged me with writing to you to request permission. My master, I have some questions as follows: 1. Is there room in the physical world for correction and repentance, or is it merely the realization of what occurred in the World of the Particles? Under either assumption, to what extent is this so? 2. When Allah’s prophet Jacob (a) was told that his son had stolen, he said, ‘Rather, your souls have enticed you to something.’ What did he mean by this statement when the event contained glad tidings of Joseph’s return (a)? 3. ‘And He will admit them into the Garden, which He has made known to them’ ([56]). In what manner was it made known? 4. ‘And man supplicates for evil as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty’ ([57]). What does it mean? 5. ‘Then he will have neither power nor helper’ ([58]). Who is the human being in this surah: the perfect one or ignorance? I also have private matters: 1. Is the following lineage correct: ‘He is Shaykh Sultan Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Baqir-who came to Sudan from honored Mecca-ibn Sayyed Ali al-Madani-who died in Medina in 889 AH-ibn Shahwan al-Husayni al-Jumayli ibn Imran ibn Ali Nur al-Din ibn Muhammad Wafa Abu al-Abbas-who died in Egypt in 768 AH-ibn Ali Nur al-Din ibn Sultan Husayn Abu Ali ibn Sultan Hasan al-Akbar ibn Imam Ali al-Makki ibn Sayyed Ibrahim-who died in Morocco-ibn the ascetic Abu al-Qasim Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr ibn Ismail al-Dhahabi ibn Umar ibn Ali al-Fasi ibn Uthman ibn Husayn al-Anwar ibn Muhammad al-Husayni ibn Musa ibn Yahya ibn Isa ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Taqi ibn Hasan ibn Jafar al-Tawwab ibn Imam Ali al-Hadi ibn Muhammad al-Jawad ibn Imam Ali al-Rida ibn Imam Musa al-Kazim ibn Imam Jafar al-Sadiq ibn Imam Muhammad al-Baqir ibn Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin ibn al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib. This lineage is transmitted from a document of Sayyed Muhammad al-Tahir ibn al-Amin al-Abdallabi, whose writing is estimated to date back more than 150 years. It is copied from an older lineage written more than 400 years ago, and I possess the text of that document. The paternal cousins of Shaykh Abdullah-the al-Sharif family in Palestine-also migrated from Mecca.’ End of the lineage. I ask because this is the lineage claimed by the Abdallab, who are my forefathers. Another account, the well-known one, ends with Abdullah ibn Abbas. 2. I suffer from a chronic illness, and all my efforts to know its origin and consequently treat it have failed. I ask your supplication that Allah heal me from it. 3. My parents died upon the Sunni school. I can do nothing but supplicate for them and for my grandmother, whose favor toward me Allah knows, yet at the same time I feel constrained in doing so. Is there any fault upon me in supplicating for forgiveness for these three? May Allah grant you relief by the right of your good and pure forefathers, and make our relief part of His granting relief to you. My guardian, I ask for your supplication, which I so often need. Supplicate to Allah that He expand my breast, ease my task, accept me in calling to His guardian and vicegerent upon His earth, and grant me success in maintaining family ties and calling them to the truth in the most complete manner He desires. Peace be upon the remnant of the family of Muhammad (a). Please convey my greetings to my guardian, the Remnant of Allah and His Proof-may Allah’s prayers be upon him, his family, and his forefathers-and my apology to him (a) for my shortcomings, and ask him to favor me with his noble and blessed supplication. Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success in every good and direct your steps. A1: It is certainly another opportunity and another test. But if you are asking about its result, it is the same as in the World of the Particles-not because people are compelled to achieve the same result, but because they repeat the same shortcomings. A2: When Jacob (a) lost Benjamin, ‘He said, “Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so beautiful patience. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me. Indeed, He is the All-Knowing, the Wise”’ ([59]). He meant the first affair: their casting Joseph into the well. He knew from Allah that his loss of his second son Benjamin was also caused by their first act, casting Joseph into the well: ‘And they brought false blood upon his shirt. He said, “Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so beautiful patience. Allah is the One whose help is sought against what you describe”’ ([60]). A3: Through visions and unveiling He made it known to them. By Allah’s favor upon them, they saw the Garden and saw their stations within it while they were in this worldly life. A4: It means that a person hastens to judge what he encounters. How many times do you judge that a matter would be better if it were in a certain form, only to find in the end that good lay in what occurred, not what you wanted? How many times do you judge that a matter is one thing, only to find that the reality is contrary to your judgment? And so on. Because of his haste, a person may fall into error and fail, through haste, to distinguish good from evil. Had he deliberated, relied upon Allah, and sought guidance from Allah toward that which is nearer to right judgment, Allah would have guided him and explained to him what benefits him and rectifies his condition. A5: It is in every human being. Answer to the private matters: A1: May Allah grant you success in every good. Regarding your lineage, Allah willing, it is a noble lineage. But may Allah grant you success: be yourself a lineage to whom people after you attribute themselves and take pride in being attributed, because you supported Allah, Glorious is He, in a time when supporters of the truth were scarce. A3: There is no fault upon you in supplicating for them. In your supplication, say, ‘if their end was upon good,’ for you do not know whom Allah willed to have an end upon good by allowing him to turn toward the truth at the end of his life. If you wish to know their condition and what became of them, fast for three consecutive days and recite Surat Ya-Sin three times on each day. If Allah wills, He will make their condition known to you in a vision or in whatever manner He, Glorious and Exalted, wills. A2: I ask Allah to favor you, have mercy upon you, and do with you what He is worthy of. He is worthy of being feared and worthy of forgiveness. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
