Question 524
How does Allah testify to His own divinity in the blessed verse: ‘Allah bears witness that there is no god but He, as do the angels and those possessed of knowledge, upholding justice. There is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise’ ([6]), given that He is free of need of the servants and does not need to testify to His own divinity, since He is present to those who know Him? Thus, al-Husayn ibn Ali (a) says: ‘Blind is the eye that does not see You’ ([7]). Is there another god besides Him, or is there a station higher than Him, Glorious is He? Exalted is Allah above what they describe. Sender: Iyad al-Musawi - Iraq
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success. The testimony of Allah, the angels, and His righteous servants to the rest of creation occurs through revelation in visions and unveiling. Have you not read the words of the Exalted: ‘Whatever good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. We have sent you to the people as a messenger, and Allah suffices as a witness’ ([8]). And the words of the Exalted: ‘But Allah bears witness to what He sent down to you; He sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness, and Allah suffices as a witness’ ([9]). And the words of the Exalted: ‘Those who disbelieve say, “You are not a messenger.” Say, “Allah suffices as a witness between me and you, and so does the one who possesses knowledge of the Book”’ ([10]). And the words of the Exalted: ‘Say, “Allah suffices as a witness between me and you. Indeed, He is All-Aware and All-Seeing of His servants”’ ([11]). Reflect upon the verses, and reflect upon how Allah and His angels testify for His messengers before the people and their nations when they are sent. Is it not through visions and unveiling? Have you not read the words of the Exalted: ‘And when I revealed to the disciples, “Believe in Me and in My messenger,” they said, “We believe, so bear witness that we are Muslims”’ ([12]). How did Allah reveal to the disciples? Was it not through visions? Thus, Glorious is He, He testifies for His prophets, messengers, and proofs before the people through visions and unveiling. Likewise, He testifies for Himself when He speaks to people through visions and makes known to them His existence and that He has dominion over everything, Glorious and Exalted is He. An example of His testifying for Himself before people is when He shows them visions of unseen matters that occur after a period of time. He thereby intends to tell these people that He exists, that He has dominion, and that He asks them to turn toward Him, Glorious and Exalted is He. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
