Question 562
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Prayers and peace be upon the most honorable of creation, Muhammad, and upon his good and pure family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and may He grant them abundant peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you, Yamani of the family of Muhammad, my guardian and the guardian of every Muslim man and woman. My master and guardian, I ask Allah, the Most High, the All-Powerful, that you be in the best condition. My guardian, I have a question concerning nursing a child: Is it permissible for a woman to ask her husband for payment for nursing her son? The second question: What about a woman’s service to her husband in the home? Is she compelled and obligated to serve him? The third question concerns a woman beautifying her eyebrow. There is a form of beautification of the eyebrow called ‘tattooing.’ Is it permissible for a woman to do that? This tattoo is dye on the eyebrow, but it is placed beneath the skin and gives color to the eyebrow. It does not prevent ablution because the dye is beneath the skin. Is it permissible to use it or not? I apologize to you and seek Allah’s forgiveness if I have burdened you with many questions. I ask Allah to grant you success in every good, make you and everyone who works with the Yamani of the family of Muhammad steadfast, and make us shields that protect Allah’s Proof upon His earth, by the right of that broken rib. In Allah’s protection and care, O brothers in faith. Sender: N. Y. - Canada
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success in every good. With respect to the rulings on marriage and the associated rights and duties of a wife, and matters concerning children, nursing, and other subjects, I have mentioned them in The Laws of Islam. You can read it and learn the ruling clearly. It is published, and the following is some of what is written in The Laws of Islam concerning nursing: ‘As for nursing: The mother is not obligated to nurse the child, and she may demand payment for nursing him. He may hire her if she is irrevocably separated from him. The father must provide the nursing fee if the child has no property. The child’s mother may nurse him herself or through another, and she is entitled to the fee. A master may compel his bondwoman to nurse. The nursing period ends at two years, and it is permissible to limit it to twenty-one months; it is preferable not to reduce it below that. It is permissible to extend it beyond two years by one or two months. The father is not obligated to pay a fee for what exceeds two years. The mother has the greater right to nurse him if she requests what another woman requests. If she asks for more, the father may take him from her and deliver him to another woman. If an unrelated woman volunteers to nurse him and the mother accepts the volunteer arrangement, the mother has the greater right to him; if she does not accept it, the father may deliver him to the volunteer. It is recommended that the boy be nursed with his mother’s milk, for it is better.’ As for a woman beautifying her eyebrow by tattooing, it is permissible. May Allah grant you success and make your steps firm. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Muharram al-Haram / 1432 AH
