Question 642
1- What do you say about the Companions with whom Allah was pleased, and with whom the Messenger-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-was pleased when he passed to the Highest Companion: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali-may Allah be pleased with them? 2- What is the ruling on temporary marriage, which the Shia have taken as a pretext for violating people’s honor? 3- What is the ruling in Islamic law on shedding blood on Ashura, given that sorrow is known to be undesirable? 4- Our masters al-Hasan and al-Husayn are brothers, the sons of Ali-may Allah be pleased with him-and the sons of Fatima al-Zahra-may Allah be pleased with her. Each took a great stance. Through our master al-Hasan, Allah united the Islamic nation, gathered the Muslims together, and reconciled its two groups. Our master al-Husayn-may Allah be pleased with him-also took a great and well-known stance. Why, then, is sorrow renewed for his stance while the matter of our master al-Hasan is forgotten, when I see him as more deserving of commemoration-may Allah be pleased with him? 5- Why do you not advise the Shia to unite with all Muslims, Sunni and Shia, in one prayer in one mosque? Supporters Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. 1- We ask Allah to be pleased with the Companions who merit His pleasure and are described as believers. But we must investigate each Companion to determine whether he was among those with whom Allah was pleased and among the believers. Perhaps the narrations of the Pond, related by al-Bukhari and others, provide sufficient reason for us to be concerned in this regard. Here are some of them: It is stated in Sahih al-Bukhari-al-Bukhari, 1401–1981 CE, Dar al-Fikr for Printing, Publishing, and Distribution, offset edition of the Dar al-Tibaa al-Amirah edition in Istanbul-vol. 5, pp. 191–192: ‘Chapter: “I was a witness over them while I remained among them; when You took me, You were the Watcher over them, and You are Witness over all things.” Abu al-Walid narrated to us; Shubah narrated to us; al-Mughirah ibn al-Numan informed us, saying: I heard Said ibn Jubayr narrate from Ibn Abbas-may Allah the Exalted be pleased with them both-who said: The Messenger of Allah-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-delivered an address and said, “O people, you will be gathered to Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.” He then said, “As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it-a promise binding upon Us; indeed, We shall do it,” to the end of the verse. He then said, “Indeed, the first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham. Men from my nation will be brought and taken to the left. I will say, ‘My Lord, my companions!’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’ I will say as the righteous servant said: ‘I was a witness over them while I remained among them; when You took me, You were the Watcher over them.’ It will be said, ‘These continued turning back on their heels from the time you departed from them.’”’ And in Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 5, p. 192: ‘Chapter: His words, “If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.” Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us; al-Mughirah ibn al-Numan narrated to us, saying: Said ibn Jubayr narrated to me from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-who said, “You will be gathered, and some people will be taken to the left. I will say as the righteous servant said: ‘I was a witness over them while I remained among them,’ until His words, ‘the Almighty, the All-Wise.’”’ And in Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 5, p. 240: ‘Chapter: “As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it-a promise binding upon Us.” Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us; Shubah narrated to us from al-Mughirah ibn al-Numan, a sheikh from al-Nakha, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas-may Allah be pleased with them both-who said: The Prophet-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-delivered an address and said, “You will be gathered to Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised: ‘As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it-a promise binding upon Us; indeed, We shall do it.’ The first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham. Men from my nation will be brought and taken to the left. I will say, ‘My Lord, my companions!’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’ I will say as the righteous servant said: ‘I was a witness over them while I remained,’ to His words, ‘Witness.’ It will be said, ‘These continued turning back on their heels from the time you departed from them.’”’ And in Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 7, p. 206: ‘Chapter: The Pond and the words of Allah, the Exalted, “Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar.” Abdullah ibn Zayd said: The Prophet-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-said, “Be patient until you meet me at the Pond.” Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us; Abu Awanah narrated to us from Sulayman, from Shaqiq, from Abdullah, from the Prophet-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-who said, “I will precede you to the Pond.” Amr ibn Ali narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us; Shubah narrated to us from al-Mughirah, who said: I heard Abu Wail narrate from Abdullah-may Allah be pleased with him-from the Prophet-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-who said, “I will precede you to the Pond. Men among you will be raised up, then snatched away before me. I will say, ‘My Lord, my companions!’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’”’ 2- Try to be fair to yourselves and ask for the evidence. Temporary marriage is Allah’s law. A Quranic verse was sent down concerning it, and the Messenger of Allah (s) did not prohibit it, until Umar spoke concerning it according to his own opinion. Umar is neither a messenger nor one of Allah’s proofs. Here: read what is in your books, for perhaps you are unaware. Al-Bukhari related from Imran ibn al-Husayn that he said: ‘The verse of mutah was sent down in Allah’s Book, and we practiced it with the Messenger of Allah-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him. No Quran was sent down prohibiting it, and he did not forbid it until he died. A man then said according to his opinion whatever he wished.’ Muhammad-meaning al-Bukhari-said: ‘It is said that the man was Umar-may Allah be pleased with him’ ([99]). Al-Bukhari related this in his Sahih, which, by consensus of the Sunni scholars whose opinions carry weight, is the soundest book after the Quran. In explicit terms admitting no interpretation, it states that mutah is permissible and that this permissibility continues until the Day of Resurrection. It also explicitly states that no Quran was sent down prohibiting it, that the Prophet (s) did not forbid it before passing to the Highest Companion, and that the one who prohibited it was Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Sunni authority on hadith, Imam Muslim, related in his Sahih, in the chapter on temporary marriage, from Ismail, from Qays, who said: ‘I heard Abdullah say, “We used to go on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him-without women. We said, ‘Should we not castrate ourselves?’ He prohibited us from doing so. Then he permitted us to marry a woman for a fixed term in exchange for a garment.” Abdullah then recited: “O you who believe, do not forbid the good things Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors”’ ([100]). In another narration, also in Sahih Muslim, Abu Nadrah said: ‘I was with Jabir ibn Abdullah when someone came and said, “Ibn Abbas and Ibn al-Zubayr have disagreed concerning the two mutahs.” Jabir said, “We practiced both with the Messenger of Allah-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him. Umar then forbade us, and we did not return to them”’ ([101]). Imam Muslim also related: ‘… Ibn Abbas used to enjoin mutah, while Ibn al-Zubayr forbade it. He said: This was mentioned to Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said, “The narration circulated through me. We practiced mutah with the Messenger of Allah-may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him. When Umar took authority, he said: ‘Allah permitted His Messenger whatever He willed, by whatever means He willed, and the Quran has reached its appointed places. So complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah as Allah commanded you, and make permanent ([102]) your marriage to these women. If a man who has married a woman for a term is brought to me, I will surely stone him’”’ ([103]). So be mindful of Allah and do not speak about Allah’s religion without knowledge. 3- Ashura reminds the believers of Allah’s religion and the supremacy of Allah, which some arrogantly usurped without right. 4- Mourning al-Husayn is mourning al-Hasan, Ali, and the Messenger of Allah-indeed, all the prophets and messengers-because its purpose is to remind people of Allah’s religion and the oppression of Allah’s vicegerents. 5- The Imam’s objective is to unite all humanity upon the religion of pure monotheism.
