Question 665
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. We praise Allah for His magnificent guidance, the vastness of His mercy, and His manifestation of His proofs through His wisdom. He commissioned them as messengers and Imams, bearers of glad tidings, warners, and guides, so that whoever perished would perish upon clear proof and whoever lived would live upon clear proof. I testify that there is no god but Allah, One God, the Self-Sufficient, and that Muhammad is His servant whom He chose. He sent down the Book to him and revealed through it an Arabic Quran free of crookedness, by which he called us to salvation. Then he left among us the Book of Allah and, through it, clearly disclosed Allah’s proofs (a). Through them Allah clarified His religion to us and opened the springs of His knowledge; they guide by the truth. O Allah, send prayers upon Your highest word, Muhammad, and his good and pure family. A Series of Questions Concerning Grave Matters Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan and the brothers who are the supporters of Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan: Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Among the most important means by which Allah’s proof is recognized is questioning him concerning grave matters. There is no doubt that no grave matter compares to the sciences of the Quran, since the Quran informs of what was, what will be, and what exists, provided that the reader adheres to the intent of the Speaker, Mighty and Majestic. Because people moved away from the language of the Quran and its leadership toward foreign methods-awkward language-in interpretation and clarification, disagreement and opposition arose concerning those sciences, so the commentaries came to convey immense and abundant disagreement. Since difference and contradiction are marks of human production, as the Quran has affirmed, the Quran’s governance over reports and human productions in order to clarify whether or not a source is sound is an actual governance. Through it, a claimant is rejected and the one Allah indicated should be followed, obeyed, and submitted to is followed. There is no gate to knowing the proofs except through Allah, and my success is only through Allah. First question: ‘… When you said to the one upon whom Allah bestowed favor and upon whom you bestowed favor, “Keep your wife and be mindful of Allah,” while concealing within yourself what Allah would disclose, and you feared the people, though Allah has more right that you fear Him. Then when Zayd had fulfilled his need of her, We married her to you, so that there would be no restriction upon the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they have fulfilled their need of them. Allah’s command is accomplished’ [al-Ahzab 33:37]. ‘Those who convey Allah’s messages and fear Him and fear no one except Allah-and Allah is sufficient as a reckoner. Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. Allah is Knowing of all things’ [al-Ahzab 33:39–40]. Question: In the first passage, the Quran affirms of the one addressed, ‘and you feared the people, though Allah has more right that you fear Him,’ while in the second it categorically denies that such fear occurs, considering ‘and they fear no one.’ What does Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan say concerning what some may regard as a contradiction between the two passages? Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. There is no contradiction, because the party for whose sake he fears differs in the two passages. In the first, he fears the people for the sake of Allah’s religion that he bears; in the second, he does not fear the people for himself. Second question: First passage: ‘… Those who believe and whose hearts find reassurance in the remembrance of Allah. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find reassurance’ [al-Ra‘d 13:28]. Second passage: ‘… The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who place their trust in their Lord’ [al-Anfal 8:2]. Question: In the first passage, the Quran affirms that the state of one who is reminded is reassurance, while in the second it is trembling, and the two states are far apart. What does Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan say concerning what some may regard as a contradiction between the two passages? Sender: al-Amin - Iraq Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. There is no contradiction. Rather, both states must come together in the hearts of Allah’s allies. Reassurance and security are caused by looking toward Him, Glorious is He, and knowing that He is the Forgiving, the Merciful, who forgives sins and forgives the immense sin of the ego; that He does not turn away one who asks; that He grants safety to one who is afraid; and that His giving begins without being earned. Trembling and fear are caused by looking at the self and recognizing its egotism, darkness, shortcomings, and its deserving to be brought to account, because it is the locus of the sin of turning toward the ego and being heedless of Him, Glorious is He.
