Question 699

A mattress more than twenty-five centimeters thick became impure with a child’s urine. This mattress cannot be washed with water because the water remains inside it and does not come out, but there are companies that wash such bedding with special equipment. The method used to wash and disinfect the mattress is to apply pressurized hot-water steam to the mattress only, rather than water. Does the mattress become pure through this method of washing or not? May Allah reward you with the best reward. A female supporter - Taleqan

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. To purify it, connected water-such as the water flowing through household pipes-can be made to reach it. The impure place can also be purified with steam. But the impure substance itself is not purified merely by directing water vapor upon it; rather, it must be removed, dissipated in a large quantity of water such as piped water, or subjected to water vapor for a relatively long period sufficient for the vapor to remove the impure substance and purify the place or spot.
