Question 703
What is the ruling concerning a person with autism? Is he charged with the religious rulings like other accountable people? Hanaʾ Sa‘d - Amarah
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Allah does not charge a soul beyond its capacity. In general, if a human being is not aware, or his awareness and comprehension are very weak, it is better that he be taught the acts of worship-at least ablution and prayer. Even if they are not obligatory for him, they benefit him in this world and the Hereafter.
