Question 720
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I am an employee of a government company, and my work is to distribute the employees’ salaries. Each month, after distributing the salaries, there are surplus amounts, so we collect them for the following month to cover a shortage or replace damaged currency. Sometimes what we collected was exhausted. But over the last four years, the money accumulated until it became a large amount. I wanted to return it, but they told me that the distributor had prepared the salary lists and that if I gave it to the new person, he would take it for himself and would not return it to the company. What must I do with this money? Abu Ali - Basra
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. You are supposed to return the money through a path by which you are certain that it returns to the company that entrusted it to you and that no one seizes it. If you find no path to do this and the matter is confined to either giving it to this person, who will take it for himself, or taking it yourself, then you may take it and distribute it among orphans, widows, and the poor.
