Question 745
A woman performing the umrah had a split in her lip because of the dry weather. Fearing that blood would come out, she applied only to the location of the split a moisturizer she had obtained by medical prescription, which had a cocoa scent. What is the ruling?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If, as stated in the question, you were compelled to apply the ointment, its ruling is as I explained in The Laws of Islam. In your situation, nothing is incumbent upon you. I will quote the ruling from The Laws of Islam here: ‘The eleventh: using an ointment containing perfume is forbidden after entering consecration, and before entering consecration if its scent remains until consecration. Likewise, using an ointment without perfume after entering consecration is forbidden when done by choice, but permissible when compelled’ ([34]). ‘One who uses a perfumed ointment while in consecration owes a sheep. In a case of necessity, nothing is incumbent upon him’ ([35]).
