Question 753
Is backbiting forbidden only concerning believers, or does it include one who opposes the true doctrine? Which opponents may be backbitten? Does this include those who are blamelessly deficient and those who culpably fall short in recognizing the truth? What of the obstinate? In which cases is backbiting permissible or licensed?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Forbidden backbiting is mentioning a believer’s concealed fault in his absence. There is no backbiting concerning one who does not believe in the truth, but the character of a believer is supposed to include avoiding delving into people’s concealed faults if he becomes aware of them. It is not permissible to mention a believer’s concealed fault before the people even in the believer’s presence. If he mentions it, he has deliberately humiliated the believer, and this too is a forbidden act like backbiting. Ahmed Alhasan
