Question 768

My master, as I mentioned to you, I am a butcher. My brother supporters vow animals for slaughter, aqiqahs, and sacrifices. We collect the amounts and purchase one or more animals, depending upon the money collected, so that the quantity will suffice for distribution among the supporters’ families. The problem here is that at the time of slaughter I do not know for which Imam I should intend it. If it is an aqiqah, I do not mention the name of the person for whom it is performed. Is it permissible to slaughter with a knife of any type? I have burdened you, my master, with my questions. Sender: Hadi (Abu Hasan) - Iraq

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. It is permissible to slaughter with a sharp iron knife. There is no problem if the knife is made from an alloy containing a proportion of iron, as is the condition of knives found in markets. Regarding a vow and an aqiqah, at the time of slaughter and cutting the jugulars you do not have to intend that this animal is for a particular vow or that this is the aqiqah of a particular person. Rather, the intention of the person making the vow or aqiqah when he gives you the money to purchase the animal for him is sufficient.
