Question 786

O Allah, send prayers and peace upon Muhammad, the Imams, and the Mahdis. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. While conveying the call on a foreign forum, someone asked about the source from which jurisprudential rulings are taken if they are not taken from the religious authorities. I told him about the Yamani (a), and that if he had a jurisprudential question, he should write it and, Allah willing, we would answer it. These questions have been translated into Arabic. Please answer them as quickly as possible; may Allah reward you with good: Is wearing black throughout the year recommended or disliked? What is Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan’s opinion of tatbir? What is his opinion of the face veil? I was browsing the website and noticed that someone on the forum asked about the third testimony in the call to prayer and iqamah-‘I testify that Ali is the guardian of Allah.’ Does Ahmed Alhasan know whether the Imams (a) used to say this in the call to prayer and iqamah, or whether the Prophet (s) permitted it? Some answers exist but have not been published, so I do not know whether their publication is permitted. Therefore, these are all the questions, and we await the answer. May Allah grant you success in every good and bless your deeds in supporting the Yamani of the family of Muhammad. May the best prayers and peace be upon him, his fathers, his Household, and his progeny. Sender: Zaynab al-Shammari - Iraq/Baghdad

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. A1: Wearing black throughout the year is neither recommended nor disliked, but it is recommended that a human being attend to the cleanliness of his clothing. A2: Tatbir in itself is permissible if it is a simple wound only to draw blood and does not harm the believer. But if it causes ordinary people to be repelled from Islam or Islam to be disparaged, it is not permissible. This is what occurs these days. One who wants to perform tatbir can do so in his home and away from people’s eyes. This is also better for him, so that his deed may be sincere to Allah if through the deed he truly seeks Allah’s Face. As for those who perform it in an organized, collective manner before ordinary people, especially opponents and non-Muslims, they cause people to be repelled from Islam, and their act is therefore forbidden. A3: The face veil is permissible but not obligatory. A4: Testimony in the call to prayer concerning the proofs occurs when they are commissioned. Thus, the time for testimony concerning Ali and his progeny (a) was when Ali (a) assumed the divine vicegerency after the death of the Messenger of Allah (s). As for their avoiding matters of the religious law, or legislating matters as dissimulation and to spare their Shia harm and killing, this does not change their being religiously lawful matters. The Imams (a) were under dissimulation to the extent that, at times, they were compelled to break the fast on the last day of Ramadan in conformity with the unjust ruler’s breaking of the fast. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
