In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace be upon you, my master and guardian, O Riser of the family of Muhammad (a). I ask Allah to protect you and your good and pure family and grant you victory over your enemies. I would like to ask whether something is lawful or forbidden, and if it is forbidden, I would like to know the cause of the prohibition so I may benefit. What is the ruling concerning playing chess if it does not distract me from prayer and the obligations, is not played for wagering or other such matters, and is not played addictively, but merely to spend time with my companion sometimes for entertainment? Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
