Question 119

Phenomena such as floods and lightning sometimes occur, and they may frighten some people but not others. Does their occurrence make Salat al-Ayat obligatory?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

They must be frightening to most believers in the sense that they are regarded as a sign of punishment or a warning to the people of the earth. The issue is not merely that they are frightening, but that the frightening phenomenon is connected to the heavens-that is, to the inhabitants of the heavens among the agents of God, Glorified and Exalted is He.
