Question 119
Phenomena such as floods and lightning sometimes occur, and they may frighten some people but not others. Does their occurrence make Salat al-Ayat obligatory?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
They must be frightening to most believers in the sense that they are regarded as a sign of punishment or a warning to the people of the earth. The issue is not merely that they are frightening, but that the frightening phenomenon is connected to the heavens—that is, to the inhabitants of the heavens among the agents of God, Glorified and Exalted is He.
