Question 7
When there is more than one method for determining a prayer time, as with identifying the time of Fajr, may a person choose whichever method he wishes?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
They are applied in order, not as alternatives. The text is: ‘As for Fajr, if it can be observed and identified by the sign explained in The Laws of Islam, then that is used. Otherwise, it is calculated when the sun is 19 degrees below the horizon. If that cannot be determined, it is one and a half hours—90 minutes—before sunrise.’
