Question 6
Prayer times are defined in The Laws of Islam. What should a person do if he cannot determine the times by those signs while living in a non-Muslim country where the daytime is very short?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
For Maghrib, the time can be distinguished easily because it is when the sun's disk disappears. As for zawal, if he cannot distinguish it as explained in The Laws of Islam and does not have a calculation timetable that he has checked and can rely on, he should take zawal to be the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. As for Fajr, if he can observe it and identify it by the sign explained in The Laws of Islam, he should do so. Otherwise, it is calculated when the sun is 19 degrees below the horizon. If that cannot be determined, it is one and a half hours—90 minutes—before sunrise.
