Question 28
What is the ruling on the prayer and fasting of a prisoner who is continually moved from place to place against his will?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
As for the prisoner's prayer and fasting, he performs his prayer in full and observes the obligatory fast in every situation so long as he does not know how long he will remain in prison. If he knows his situation, he acts accordingly. If he will remain in prison for fewer than ten days and the prison is a travel distance away from his place of residence or home, he shortens the prayer and does not fast. If he will remain for ten days or more, he performs the prayer in full and fasts. Merely being transferred from one prison to another does not change anything.
