Question 27

How is prayer determined as shortened or full in very large cities such as Sydney, whose buildings are continuous? How is the starting point for calculating travel distance determined in such cities?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

A large city, however extensive it becomes, is regarded as one city. Whatever distance a person travels within it, he is not regarded as a traveler, so he performs the prayer in full and fasts. Likewise, if the built-up areas of two cities are connected, a person performs the prayer in full and fasts in both, even if he travels a legally relevant distance from one to the other. If their built-up areas are not connected but the distance between them is extremely small, such that the midpoint between them would not count as the boundary at which travel concessions begin for either city, then he likewise performs the prayer in full and fasts in both cities, even if he covers the legal travel distance while moving between them.
