Question 131

May a person who owes a missed obligatory prayer perform a recommended supererogatory prayer? And if the person enters a supererogatory prayer and remembers during it that an obligatory prayer is owed, which supererogatory prayer is meant by the instruction to begin the obligatory prayer?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

A person may perform a supererogatory prayer when the missed obligatory prayer owed is not one that must be performed before the current prayer. If a missed obligatory prayer is one that must precede the current prayer, it must be made up before the person performs a supererogatory prayer or the current obligatory prayer. If the person begins the current obligatory prayer and during it remembers the missed prayer that must precede it, the person changes over to the missed prayer. But if the person is performing a supererogatory prayer and remembers the missed obligatory prayer, the person does not change over; rather, the supererogatory prayer is completed and then the missed obligatory prayer is begun and made up.
