Question 137
How is a rug or carpet purified, including one that is fixed to the floor of a house?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
With a small quantity of water, as explained previously, two washings are required: one washing to remove the actual substance of the impurity and a second washing for purification. For example, if urine is on a fixed carpet and it is to be purified with a small quantity of water, first water is poured over the place of the urine until it covers the area, and then the water together with the impurity is removed with a cloth or sponge. Second, water is poured over the place again and is likewise removed with a cloth or sponge. This second washing is the purification washing, and the place is pure afterward. With running water, it is sufficient to pour the running water over the place until the water predominates over the characteristics of the impurity.
