Question 111
Are wailing and striking oneself in mourning for the deceased permissible? What if the face becomes red or something similar occurs, such as scratching it?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Wailing and striking oneself are permissible. There is no problem if the chest or face becomes red so long as there is no significant harm. Certain acts are specifically forbidden: a woman scratching her face, plucking her hair, or cutting her hair; and a man tearing his garment upon the death of his son or wife. These acts have expiations that I detailed in al-Shara'i.
