Question 178
What is the ruling on a person who finds lost property, takes it, and then after a day or two wants to return it to the place where he found it because identifying its owner is difficult or for another reason?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The matter depends on the type of lost property, its value, and the place where it was found. In general, it is preferable that he hand it to a trustworthy person who will take responsibility for dealing with it according to Sharia.
