Question 78
I work as a doctor in a European country. It is customary here for a doctor to extend a hand to shake a patient's hand when the patient comes for examination. Not doing so may seem impolite, be misunderstood because I am Muslim, or be taken as an insult, depending on the patient. What should I do if the patient is a woman? I also ask about the similar situation of a Muslim female doctor working under the same conditions: may she shake men's hands?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If not shaking hands causes real embarrassment or difficulty, you may extend your hand to shake the hand of a non-Muslim woman if she first extends her hand to you; you should not be the one who initiates the handshake. As for a Muslim female doctor, she may not shake hands with men, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. If this creates difficulty for her, she may wear gloves and shake hands while wearing them. I ask God to bless you and grant you the good of this world and the Hereafter. He is my Guardian and He takes care of the righteous.
