Question 93
I currently work in Iraq for a civil-society organization that lends money to owners of small businesses in return for interest deducted in advance, with repayment made in monthly installments. I am not a borrower; I am an employee of the organization. Its capital comes from grants by donor countries rather than from the Iraqi people, meaning the capital is American or European. I began working with them on the basis of a previous answer from the Sayyid al-Yamani regarding the permissibility of interest-bearing loans when the owner of the money is an unbeliever or a nasibi. Is it lawful for me to work as an employee of this organization, whose headquarters are in America?

There is no riba between a believer—or a Muslim who professes love for the family of Muhammad (a)—and a person who disbelieves in the prophethood of Muhammad (s), or a nasibi who shows hostility toward the family of Muhammad or toward their followers because they follow them. An interest-bearing loan from the property of non-Muslims may be taken by a Muslim. As for working in institutions of this kind, it is permissible.
