Question 59
I made designs for one of the candidates in an election for an advisory council and received payment for the work. The candidates here—in the United Arab Emirates—are not candidates to govern; they are nominated and elected to advisory or proposal-making positions with only advisory or proposal powers in a national council, half of whose members are elected by the people while the other half are selected by the government. At the time I did not know about the blameworthiness of work that strengthens an illegitimate government. I received wages for this work and now have about four thousand dirhams, which I am saving for the expenses of my graduation project. Seven months have passed since I received it, and I expect to need it in about two months when I graduate. What is the ruling on this money? What should I do with it? Should I donate it all, pay khums on it, or perhaps donate it to the satellite channel? I do not know, and I seek guidance.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
You may spend the money on your needs. There is no need for you to pay any of it away, and do not pay khums on it unless the annual date you have designated for khums arrives or a full year has passed over it. May God grant you success and make your steps firm.
