Question 57
Selling on deferred payment with an increase in price is usury, but who determines the price of the item? Some sellers say that they have only one sale method, entirely by installments, but their price is higher than the market price. What standard is taken into consideration? Is it the market price of the commodity, or does the shop owner himself determine the price?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The shop owner determines the price. That is, if he says, 'I sell it for this price now, and I sell it for a higher price on deferred payment,' then that is usury. But merely being more expensive than the market is not the criterion, because merchants set different prices according to what suits the circumstances of each of them. There is also a problem if the price is excessively high.
