Question 60
I would like to ask about cracked or pirated computer programs, such as design software and antivirus programs, which normally must be purchased and may be very expensive, beyond our ability to buy. We can obtain cracked copies from the internet and use them without paying anything. What is the ruling on downloading and installing cracked programs, and what is the ruling on continuing to use such programs that are already installed on our computers?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If the owner of the program is one whose property is religiously inviolable, it is not permissible; otherwise, it is permissible.
