Question 169
Sometimes we participate in tribal settlements involving believers and non-believers, such as attending a tribal compensation proceeding after someone was struck by a car. Under tribal custom they do not necessarily pay the legally prescribed blood money. May we participate, and is demanding such a settlement religiously valid? What is the religious standard for blood money in our time?

Participation is permissible. What normally occurs in a tribal settlement is a process of mutual agreement and reconciliation between the two parties, and there is no problem with that. The parties may mutually agree on a particular amount.
