Question 171

Short selling is a type of sale offered by some online brokerage companies, in which short sellers profit when a share price falls. For example, if an investor believes that Company X's share is overvalued at $15 and expects the price to fall, he can click 'sell short' to open a short position. If the share falls to $10, he gains $5 per share; if it rises to $20, he loses $5 per share. What is the ruling?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

It is permissible.
