Question 6
Is swearing by al-Abbas (a) and the other awliya like swearing by God, and does it carry the same expiation?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
An oath by the prophets and the successors is a binding oath, and it is not permissible for anyone to swear by them, or by their right before God, falsely. As for expiation, there is no prescribed expiation for it; seeking forgiveness is sufficient if the oath was false. It is better to slaughter a sheep and feed the poor from it so that God may ward off any harm resulting from the oath if it was false—and even if the person was truthful in his oath.
