Question 170
A person witnesses an assault or murder and knows the actual perpetrator, but another person is wrongly accused and may be imprisoned or punished. If the witness was the only person present, is testimony obligatory even though giving it may expose him to problems from the true perpetrator?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Testimony is obligatory in the situation described in order to repel injustice and establish the truth.
