Question 89

I watch some video clips on the internet in which several speakers discuss the human self and how to rid it of negative qualities by returning to the origin of the self. Most of them stop at the human self as the starting point and do not proceed to the Creator, Glorified is He, so their discussion is not religious for them or their listeners. Only at the final point, when nothing remains but acknowledging the One who originated and formed creation, do they stop with an improvised explanation. May a monotheist listen in order to gain wisdom while acknowledging the Creator, Glorified is He, or does he sin by doing so?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Listening does not harm. You may, for example, hear the arguments of Jews, Christians, and atheists in order to respond to them. But if by listening you mean believing and affirming what these people say about the self, that is not correct. Even if they correctly identify one matter, they err in another. The correct approach is to know the self through the Creator of the self, Glorified is He, and the path to that knowledge is His books and His messengers, Glorified and Exalted is He.
