Question 112
I work in a hospital surgical ward. Women with bodily burns are brought to us and there is no female staff to treat such injuries. A patient may need to be taken to the bathroom with her husband, mother, or another mahram so that burned skin can be removed, but they cannot do this without our assistance. What is the ruling?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Muslims must provide female medical staff to treat women. Indeed, an appropriate place must be provided for treating women with dignity and honor. Many duties follow from this, including that a sufficient number of women must enter all medical specialties to cover the need, and that women's treatment areas must be genuinely separated, either through women's hospitals or by dividing hospitals appropriately. As for the situation of brother Abu Naba', when necessity exists it is permissible for male specialists to treat women's burns. The sin and wrongdoing are borne by the tyrannical government and by every negligent Muslim man or woman who fails to work toward providing the proper means for treating women.
