Question 156
Regarding tawriyah—when a person says something while intending a meaning other than the apparent one, such as saying ‘He is my brother’ while meaning a brother in Islam—what exactly does tawriyah mean, and is it permissible?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Tawriyah is when a person conceals the truth from another person without lying to him, such as causing him to imagine something other than the truth. Tawriyah is not permissible toward a person when one thinks it may cause that person harm; in such a case there is no difference between it and lying. Tawriyah is a way of preventing harm or obtaining benefit while avoiding lying before God Almighty.
