Question 154
I suffer from psychological and mental illnesses, including severe depression, partial schizophrenia, hysteria, absent-mindedness, partial memory loss and thoughts outside my conscious awareness. I previously took a medication prescribed for patients like me, but it was also used by some young people who were addicted to alcohol. That medication did not help me. I have now been given a stronger medication that makes me calm, but it can lead me to do things without intending or knowing them; I sometimes act while unconscious, and at times awaken from loss of awareness and find myself in a place I had not consciously decided to go or in embarrassing situations. May I take this medication?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
I ask God to grant you healing; He is the Most Merciful of the merciful. It would be good for you to ask the supporters of Imam al-Mahdi in Sweden to recite the Quran over water, then wash your face and head with that water, and to recite the Quran for you. As for the medication, if doctors have prescribed it for you, follow their prescription, and perhaps God will encompass you in His mercy and grant you healing. But first and last, your healing is in your own hands in the sense that you must decide that you want to recover. Then turn to the supporters of Imam al-Mahdi; if they have a Husayniyya, attend it and have them recite the Quran for you and supplicate for you. God willing, God will grant you healing. Do not despair of God's mercy. May God grant you success and guide your steps.
