Question 78
Is a wife obligated to care for, clean, feed, and watch the child, such that she sins if she does not do so? If she decides to study or work for a few hours, is caring for the child then the husband's duty? In principle, is custody the responsibility of the wife or the husband, with the wife's participation merely recommended like cooking and cleaning?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Caring for the children is obligatory upon both spouses, each according to the time available to them. If the husband works and the wife does not, then naturally her share of caring for the children will be greater. As for household work, although it is not an obligation stipulated by the marriage contract, she must do the portion of the work connected to her own life. For example, she should do a share of cleaning the home corresponding to her share of living in it, and she should cook for herself and her children, and so on.
