Question 141
Which is better for a young woman, marriage or education? If a believer proposes to her, is it better for her to marry and leave her studies or to complete her education? If she refuses marriage because the prospective husband will not allow her to continue studying, does she sin by refusing? May she marry someone who is not among the believers? May a believing man marry someone who is not among the believers?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If marriage and education genuinely conflict, marriage is better for a woman. However, she may choose to leave marriage and continue her education if she prefers education, or she may marry and continue her education if there is no conflict between the two. A woman who believes in the truth may marry a believer in the Imams and the Mahdis from the people of truth, or she may marry a Muslim from another school who is not hostile to the Imams or the Mahdis. Marriage to a non-believer is disliked for a believing woman, so it is better for her to avoid marrying a non-believer. As for a believing man, he may marry a believing woman, a Muslim woman from another school who is not hostile to the Imams or the Mahdis, and he may also marry a Christian or Jewish woman from the People of the Book.
