Question 139
Is an unmarried woman considered to have authority over her own temporary marriage if she supports herself, is 35 years old, her father has died, and she has no older brother?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
An adult woman of sound judgment—meaning one who has reached 18 years of age, not merely someone who has reached the age of legal responsibility and is sane—may contract her own marriage. There is no difference between permanent and temporary marriage, and her guardian has no right to object, whether she is a virgin or previously married.
