Question 47
We live in Sweden and have only about four hours at night for eating and drinking. We find fasting difficult because the eating period is short and we cannot eat enough for a twenty-hour fast. We have begun to experience exhaustion, loss of energy, lethargy and dizziness throughout the day. We can do little other than sleep, and even sleep is poor because of fatigue. Is this a justification for breaking the fast, even for a few days to recover before resuming it?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If the exhaustion is severe, you may break the fast and make it up at an appropriate time. God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
