Question 12

Imam Ahmad al-Hasan said that fasting on Ashura is recommended. Did he mean fasting the entire day, or only until midday as the Twelver Shi'a do?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

I hope your quotation is accurate—may God set your affairs right. I did not say that fasting on the day of Ashura is recommended without qualification. Rather, I said: 'fasting on Ashura as an expression of grief.' As for abstaining until midday, that is not called fasting for there to be a matter of confusion between it and anything else.
