Question 13

I want to know to whom I should pay zakat and khums so that it reaches the Imam. This matter troubles me greatly and I do not know what to do about it. I bought gold and some precious stones several years ago for investment. Must I pay khums and zakat on them because I have kept them for all this time?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

May God grant you success and make your steps firm. It is not necessary that khums funds reach the vicegerent of God directly. If you are among the believers in the truth, I have established an institution to collect khums and charitable donations and spend them on many purposes, including supporting orphans and widows, seeking knowledge, and means of conveying the call of truth to the people. You may deliver the funds to some of the believers responsible for this matter through the bank accounts designated for it, or you may hand them to the office of the Call in Najaf at the blessed Mahdist seminary. As for money, precious stones, or gold that you have stored and that has remained for more than a year, you must pay its khums once. After you have paid its khums, there is no problem in continuing to store it, and you are not required to pay khums again on property whose khums has already been paid, however long it remains with you.
