Question 17

What is the ruling for a woman performing umrah whose lip cracked because of the dry weather and who, fearing that it would bleed, applied only to the cracked area a medically prescribed moisturizer that had a cocoa scent?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

If, as stated in the question, you were compelled to apply the ointment, then its ruling is as I explained in The Laws, and in your case nothing is required of you. I will reproduce the ruling from The Laws here: 'Eleventh: Using an oil containing perfume is forbidden after entering ihram, and also before ihram if its scent remains until ihram. Likewise, using a non-perfumed oil by choice after ihram is forbidden, but it is permissible when compelled.' (The Laws of Islam, vol. 2). 'Whoever uses perfumed oil while in ihram must offer a sheep, but in a case of necessity nothing is required.' (The Laws of Islam, vol. 2).
