Question 87

Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be upon you. You answered a question of mine by saying, through a narration from our master Imam Musa ibn Jafar (a), that none has looked into the jafr except a prophet or a vicegerent; that its key is Allah’s vicegerency, Mighty and Majestic; that its white portion is dissimulation; and its red portion is blood and killing. Question: Are all prophets and vicegerents (a) included in the noble narration, or not? Question: Does this narration indicate a restriction and exclusivity concerning looking into the jafr? Question: Does this narration indicate that persons outside the circle of the prophets and vicegerents (a) do not look into the jafr? If the answer is no, who are those persons? What are their qualifications and attributes? Where and how did they look into the jafr? None touch the Noble Quran except the purified. Does this apply to the jafr, given that the jafr is not like the Book of the Noble Quran? I request an answer. Kind greetings to Ahmed Alhasan and his brothers. Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be upon you. There is no harm in our having varied roles so long as our goal is one: to work in the service of our master Imam al-Mahdi (a), prepare for his appearance, and support him. May Allah reward you with the best reward of those who do good. Sender: Hashim al-Iraqi

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. A1: Every one who is sent must know all the rulings needed by the nation to which he is sent, and they are present in the jafr. A2: Looking into all the knowledge in the jafr that the nation needs is restricted to the prophets and vicegerents sent to it. A3: There are persons whom Allah may acquaint with something in the jafr. The jafr is among the blessings descending from heaven. The Exalted said: ‘Had the people of the towns believed and been Godwary, We would have opened for them blessings from heaven and earth. But they denied, so We seized them for what they used to earn’ ([155]). The verse describes them. A4: Touching in the aforementioned verse-‘None touch it except the purified’ ([156])-means knowledge. Thus everything the nation needs is known-‘touched’-only by those sent to it-‘the purified’ ([157]).

↑ [157] Narrations with this meaning have been reported, including what appears in Ibn Abbas’s argument with Muawiya concerning the merit of the family of Muhammad (a): ‘… O Muawiya, during his rule Umar ibn al-Khattab sent me to Ali ibn Abi Talib (a), saying, “I want to write the Quran in a codex, so send us what you wrote of the Quran.” He said, “By Allah, you would strike my neck before reaching it.” I asked, “Why?” He said, “Allah says, ‘None touches it except the purified,’ meaning: none attains all of it except the purified. He meant us, from whom Allah removed impurity and whom He purified completely. He said, ‘Then We gave the Book as an inheritance to those We chose from among Our servants.’ We are those whom Allah chose from among His servants. We are Allah’s chosen ones; the examples were set forth for us, and revelation descended concerning us.” Umar became angry and said, “The son of Abu Talib thinks that no one other than him has any knowledge. Whoever can recite anything from the Quran should bring it to us.” When a man came with Quran that he recited, if another man came with him, he wrote it; otherwise, he did not write it. Whoever says, O Muawiya, that any part of the Quran was lost has lied. It is collected with its people …’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 33, p. 270. In another narration, Imam Ali (a) said to Umar: ‘Far from it; there is no way to that. I brought it to Abu Bakr only so that the proof would be established against you, and so that on the Day of Resurrection you would not say, “We were unaware of this,” or say, “You did not bring it to us.” The Quran that is with me is touched only by the purified and by the vicegerents from my progeny.’ Umar said, ‘Is there a known time for its appearance?’ He said, ‘Yes. When the Qa’im from my progeny rises, he will reveal it, require the people to follow it, and the Sunna will proceed according to it. Allah’s prayers be upon him.’ Mujam Ahadith al-Imam al-Mahdi (a) by Sheikh Ali al-Kurani al-Amili, vol. 3, p. 126. (Commentator.)
