Question 155

The Exalted said: ‘It is He who is God in heaven and God on earth, and He is the Wise, the Knowing’ ([300]). Why did He distinguish between the God of heaven and the God of earth when He, Glorious is He, is one God of heaven and earth? Mukhtar Yusuf-Basra

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. That is, absolute divinity belongs to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, in heaven and on earth, in contrast to those who said that absolute divinity in heaven belongs to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, while absolute divinity on earth belongs to Jesus (a) or the Proofs (a). This occurred in the era of the Imams (a), when some who claimed to return and belong to them (a) said that they were the gods of the earth-that is, that they possessed absolute divinity on earth. They (a) dissociated themselves from this statement in narrations reported from them (a). Refer to what Sheikh al-Kulayni narrated in Al-Kafi from al-Sadiq (a) ([301]). Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)

↑ [300] Al-Zukhruf 43:84.

↑ [301] Hisham ibn al-Hakam said: Abu Shakir al-Daysani said, ‘In the Quran there is a verse that expresses our position.’ I asked, ‘Which is it?’ He said: ‘“He is the One who is God in heaven and God on earth.”’ I did not know what answer to give him. I performed the pilgrimage and told Abu Abdullah (a), who said: ‘These are the words of a malicious heretic. When you return to him, ask him, “What is your name in Kufa?” He will say, “So-and-so.” Ask him, “What is your name in Basra?” He will say, “So-and-so.” Then say: likewise, Allah our Lord is God in heaven, God on earth, God in the seas, God in the deserts, and God in every place.’ He said: I returned and went to Abu Shakir and told him. He said, ‘This was brought from the Hijaz.’ Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 128. (Commentator.)
