Question 332

When does Laylat al-Qadr begin-that is, how long after sunset does it begin, and when does it end? Is it permissible to open a restaurant to sell food? Is kohl permissible for a woman before unrelated men? Is it forbidden for an unmarried woman to apply kohl at home, let alone outside? Does everything that necessitates ritual bathing invalidate the fast? For example, does touching a corpse invalidate the fast? When time is constrained, is the call to prayer omitted, or the iqamah, or are both omitted? What is their ruling? I request detail. At what age does it become forbidden for parents to look at the private parts of their children? What is Lady al-Zahra’s (a) bridal gift in our time? What is the price of a gram of silver in al-Zahra’s (a) bridal gift? Is the gram’s price in the bridal gift the price of a gram of raw silver-that is, bullion-or the price of a gram of cast, fashioned silver, since their prices differ? Is it forbidden to eat the arugula plant-tartir? Sender: Jihad al-Asadi

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. A1: Laylat al-Qadr is the night of the 23rd of Ramadan, and its bounds are from sunset until true dawn. A2: It is permissible to open a restaurant and sell food. A3: An exhortation to humility and work, avoidance of arrogance and reliance upon others, and an explanation that exuberance and transgression when wealthy cause blessings to depart and bring poverty and need. Even need for others and poverty are among Allah’s blessings upon the believer if arrogance touches him or he transgresses, so that he may return to the right path and remember his Lord: ‘We will surely make them taste the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, perhaps they will return’ ([85]). A4: It is impermissible to apply it so that unrelated men see it. But if she applies it at home for her husband, she is not required to remove it in order to go out or meet non-mahrams. A5: It is permissible for an unmarried woman to apply kohl at home. A6: Only what I mentioned in The Laws invalidates the fast, within the details I mentioned. Touching a corpse does not invalidate the fast. A7: If time is so constrained that only enough remains to perform the units of prayer, the call to prayer and iqamah are omitted. If time permits the iqamah but not the call to prayer, the iqamah is obligatory without the call. A8: Parents are supposed not to look at the private parts of their children except to the extent necessary for cleaning and the like. Once a child is able to clean himself of impurity, bathe, and put on his clothes by himself without needing his parents’ assistance, the parents must then avoid looking at the child’s private parts, because the necessity no longer exists. A9: Her bridal gift-peace of Allah be upon her-from Allah was one-fifth of the world, and from Ali (a) it was five hundred silver dirhams, each dirham being two and a half mithqals (12.5 g). Her bridal gift in this age is the furnishings of the home in which the marriage takes place. A10: The price of raw silver-bullion. A11: There is no problem with eating arugula, which is close to the familiar radish plant. There is likewise no problem with tartir, which is a desert plant and is not arugula. Ahmed Alhasan
