Question 669

A question about Jesus’s (a) star from the east in the Gospel of Matthew. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you, my master and guardian Ahmed Alhasan. I ask Allah to make us steadfast upon your authority and support, and by His mercy, Glorious is He, to record us among those martyred before you. This question is from supporters who do not speak Arabic; they asked that it be translated and directed to the Imam (a). Question: What was the star in the east that guided the three Magi from the east to Jesus (a)? In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter two: ‘1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is the one born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to prostrate ourselves before him.”’ Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Sender: Brother Darren - United States

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success and direct your steps aright. The luminous, glowing stars in the sky are few compared with the other planets, and the stars and planets that reflect their light are few compared with the vast space in which they travel. Every celestial body affects space, and its effect may be so great that some bodies within the bounds of its influence are compelled to revolve around it as though they had submitted to it. We find stars revolving around other stars, planets revolving around stars, moons revolving around planets, and large collections of dust, planets, stars, and many solar systems revolving around a very large mass that makes something like a pit in the universe, called a black hole. This corporeal universe that we can see is one of Allah’s words. We can deafen our ears to hearing it, or we can hear it and understand from it that prophets and those who place themselves in the service of their Lord are few, like the fewness of the stars. Or we can understand from it that there are vicegerents of Allah who follow other vicegerents of Allah: we find Aaron following Moses (a), and we find Ali following Muhammad (s), just as there are suns revolving around suns. There are sincere believers who follow prophets, just as planets revolve around suns. We can understand that a human being’s effect upon the world and the people is in accordance with his deeds and sincerity to Allah, just as the effect of celestial bodies upon the universe is in accordance with their mass and the energy they emit or reflect. We can understand that when a human being is sincere to Allah, he almost becomes a light that shines from itself, just as suns almost shine from themselves; that is, he almost becomes a light containing no darkness, because he was created in the image of Allah: ‘Allah created Adam in His image’ ([30]); ‘So God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him’ ([31]). We see that a very great number of celestial bodies revolve around a deep abyss at their center called a black hole. While it does not cease devouring what falls into its mouth, they too do not cease revolving around it, as though passionately enamored of their destruction, as though they wanted to devour it and imagined that they surrounded it and that it lay in their mouths. This is exactly as all of us revolve around this world and imagine that we are devouring it when we live in it passionately attached to it, while it devours us one after another and leaves nothing of us. Worms and time grind down the bodies, and nothing remains of the souls that fall into the mouth of this world except a dark monstrosity containing no light. Few among us choose to remain far from the mouth so that, with luminous souls, they escape the gravity of this world and do not fall into its dark mouth, just as fewer celestial bodies revolve far from a black hole. As I told you, the universe is a word of Allah. Consequently, we could continue listening to it until we filled books with what this word says. If you hear this word, perhaps I do not need to tell you which star those who came to Jesus-Jesus (a)-saw, because you will certainly understand that they were hearing Allah’s words. They saw the star in the visions of the night, and through the visions Allah guided them that a light and a blessed star had descended in the Holy Land: Jesus (a). You will understand that with their eyes they saw the sky and its stars guiding them toward the direction in which the blessed star (a) had descended. They listened well to Allah’s words. For this reason, they saw this star in everything, and everything guided them to that blessed star, Jesus-Jesus (a). You too can hear Allah in everything: in His words, in the sky, in the stars, in every event you encounter daily. Even in your depths you can hear Allah, because you are a human being, and the human being is Allah’s greatest word. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
