Question 722

If a quarrel occurs between two brothers, is it permissible to lie in order to reconcile them? What is the religious duty toward these two brothers if, for example, the first has gone one way and the other another, with an enormous gulf between them? How does one reconcile them? Does he lie in order to reconcile them, or leave them as prey for the accursed Iblis?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. May Allah grant you success-you speak as though reconciling people were confined to lying! Be mindful of Allah and reconcile them with a good word, truthfulness, and trustworthiness. Remind them of the days of Allah, Allah’s allies, their deeds, and their forgiveness of those who wronged them. Remind them of Allah’s reward that He has prepared for the beneficent who do good to those who wrong them: ‘Obey Allah and the Messenger so that you may receive mercy. Hasten toward forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-conscious-those who spend in ease and hardship, restrain anger, and pardon people; Allah loves the beneficent-and those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins-and who forgives sins except Allah?-and do not knowingly persist in what they did. Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein. Excellent is the reward of those who work’ [Al Imran 3:132–136].
