Question 844

Peace be upon you. How can I be certain you are the Mahdi? If I wish to see you, where can I find you so that I may pledge allegiance? Do you know the unseen, or know what exists and what will exist? Yasir al-Sufyani al-Thaqafi - al-Taʾif, Arabian Peninsula

Scientific Committee Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Truth is known through its evidence, and evidence is taken from the Book and progeny, confirming the Messenger of Allah’s instruction to his nation. Consider this hadith from the companion Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah during his pilgrimage on the Day of Arafah, upon his she-camel al-Qaswaʾ, delivering a sermon. I heard him say: “O people, I have left among you that which, if you take hold of it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl al-Bayt.”’ Your recognition of the Mahdi must therefore rest upon the Quran and progeny. Unfortunately, Muslims generally are governed by fanatical attachment to their forefathers’ religion without research and reflection. The day has come for Muslims to notice that fanatical attachment to any side other than truth is ignorant fanaticism. Even the side of truth is not recognized through fanaticism, but through research, scrutiny, learning, and examining evidence whose provenance is conclusive. In the Noble Quran Allah placed fixed general laws governing life’s movement so as to realize the purpose of creation in every world. Among these important governing laws is the law for recognizing Allah’s Proof and vicegerent in every age. It has never changed from the appointment of the first vicegerent over creation, Adam, until Allah inherits the earth and those upon it. It is Allah’s practice concerning those who passed before: ‘Allah’s established practice concerning those who passed before; you will find no change in Allah’s practice’ [al-Ahzab 33:62]. The Quran’s general governing laws are fixed divine practices, but people rejected their application and consequently harvested all this backwardness, humiliation, and submission to tyrants. Had the nation applied the divine law, its condition would not be as we see today. The law for recognizing the divine vicegerent rests upon three clauses: First: the vicegerent is explicitly designated, as Allah directly designated Adam in the assembly of angels: ‘When your Lord said to the angels, “Indeed, I am placing a vicegerent upon the earth,” they said, “Will You place therein one who causes corruption and sheds blood while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?” He said, “Indeed, I know what you do not know”’ [al-Baqarah 2:30]; or through Adam when he left a testament naming his successor. Thus the divine practice continued through our prophet Muhammad. Here a point is recorded against the nation: why did it cease acting according to Allah’s practice?! Second: divine knowledge, confirming the Most High’s saying: ‘He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful”’ [al-Baqarah 2:31]. Allah’s vicegerent must be the most knowledgeable person of his age concerning Allah’s intent and divine knowledge. Third: calling to Allah’s governance and allegiance to Allah, confirming the Most High’s saying: ‘When I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration’ [al-Hijr 15:29]. These three clauses cannot be combined in a man unless he is Allah’s Proof and vicegerent. The Mahdi announced by the Messenger is Allah’s vicegerent; this divine law must apply to him in all three clauses without any clause absent. It applies to the Mahdi Ahmed Alhasan. As the Messenger informed, he is born at the end time; and as the Messenger said, he is from his progeny. Imam Ahmed is from Muhammad’s progeny, descendants one from another. All three clauses are present in him: he is named in the Messenger’s testament; he is the most knowledgeable of people concerning the Quran, Torah, and Gospel; and today he is the only person in the world calling to establishing Allah’s governance and working according to this divine path. His beloved supporters have paid with their blood, and he has paid and continues to pay from his own condition: he is displaced and pursued, like the prophets, messengers, and Allah’s vicegerents, confirming the Most High’s description of peoples with Allah’s vicegerents: ‘Those who disbelieved said to their messengers, “We will surely expel you from our land unless you return to our creed.” Their Lord revealed to them, “We will surely destroy the wrongdoers”’ [Ibrahim 14:13]. This is the condition of the Mahdi and his supporters today. He calls to the people: ‘Do you fail us and retreat from supporting us? Allah is sufficient for us and the best Trustee. Do you excuse abandoning the family of Muhammad through dissimulation, fear, or fewness of number and equipment? Did Talut not fight Goliath’s numerous and well-equipped army with few people and little equipment? Did Muhammad not fight at Badr with few people and little equipment, and Allah supported them? Does the Quran not call in your hearing: “How many a small company has overcome a large company by Allah’s permission; Allah is with the patient” [al-Baqarah 2:249]? O you who fail to support Imam al-Mahdi, do you await anything but alignment with the Sufyani-may Allah curse him-the heir of Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah-may Allah curse him-after aligning with the greatest Dajjal, America? Then receive glad tidings of a Fire whose fuel is “people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.”’ As for making allegiance conditional upon seeing the claimant in person, no rational person has stated this, although repeated usage has made us accustomed to this contrived condition from people today. We have repeatedly answered and advised that it comes from Satan-may Allah curse him-so how can you listen to a condition he whispers? Look back: the Negus-may Allah be pleased with him-believed, affirmed, and pledged allegiance to Muhammad by examining his evidence. He died without seeing the Prophet. When news of his death arrived, the Prophet ordered his companions to gather and led the absentee funeral prayer for the Negus’s spirit-may Allah have mercy upon him. In the opinion of one who conditions allegiance upon seeing the claimant, was the Negus’s allegiance invalid? ‘Say: bring your proof, if you are truthful.’ Allah’s saying suffices regarding knowledge of the unseen: ‘Knower of the unseen, He does not disclose His unseen to anyone except a messenger whom He has approved; then He appoints guards before him and behind him, so that He may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord. He encompasses what is with them and has numbered all things precisely’ [al-Jinn 72:26–28]. Reflect carefully and you will know the answer.
