Question 152

It is stated that congregational prayer is not valid when there is a barrier between the imam and follower that prevents seeing the imam, except when the follower is a woman. Does the ruling differ according to the kind of barrier through which a woman may follow—for example, a solid wall, a wall with a window or open door, a curtain, and so on?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

If a wall has a window that allows the imam to be seen, it is not considered a barrier that prevents seeing the imam. If a wall prevents every form of connection with the imam, even hearing, then congregational prayer cannot really be conceived in that situation either. The barrier with which a woman's prayer behind the imam is valid is therefore a barrier that at least allows the sound of the imam, or the sound of someone conveying the imam's movements to the followers, to be heard—for example, a curtain, a low wall, a thin wooden wall, a perforated wall, and similar barriers.
