Question 140
Al-Shara'i states that congregational prayer is not valid for supererogatory prayers except the prayer for rain and the two Eid prayers when the conditions of obligation are not met. What, then, is meant by the statement elsewhere that a person performing a 'supererogatory' prayer may follow one performing an obligatory prayer, and that a person performing an obligatory prayer may in some cases follow one performing a 'supererogatory' prayer?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The person described here as performing a 'supererogatory' prayer is not someone performing a nafilah prayer, but someone repeating an obligatory prayer. This is explained by the statement immediately following it in al-Shara'i: 'It is recommended for a person who prayed alone to repeat the prayer if the person finds others performing that prayer in congregation, whether as imam or follower.'
